One of the best preserved
17th Century Inns in the Country
Temporary Closure - 1 December 2024
We regret that due to staff sickness we will be closed on 1 December 2024. We will re-open as normal on 4 December.
Christmas dining at The Ostrich
In addition to our normal menu and specials which will be available throughout the festive period, we have prepared a special Christmas Menu which is available for pre-booking for parties of any size Wednesday to Saturday beween the 1st and the 30th of December. If you would like the Christmas Menu please note it in the comment box when making your booking.
Fish & Chip Fridays
Don’t miss out on our delicious and crispy fish and chips every Friday!
Come join us for a classic British meal. Our Butty Bach beer batter is golden, the chips are hand cut on site, and on Fridays only we prepare our Fish and Chips in traditional beef dripping. Served with mushy peas and tartare sauce.
Takeaway available - Collection only. Order on arrival and have a drink while we cook for you, or call in advance on 01594 833260.
Restoration & Repair Works
The roof works are now complete, the main scaffold is down and the garden is back to normal and starting to recover.
We look forward to a warmer and drier winter this year (at least inside the pub!).
The final elements of the works are some additional fire protection, repainting the exterior, and replacing the 1980's flood lights to the front with something a bit more discrete and in keeping with the village.
Some elements will require an additional listed building consent application - so watch out for the notice on the board by the Lytch Gate - and the external painting will be left until the Spring of 2025 when the weather improves.
An ancient pub in the Forest of Dean & the Wye Valley
The Ostrich Inn is a charming and ancient pub situated in Newland, a beautiful village that lies on the western edge of the Forest of Dean and in the Wye Valley, both areas of outstanding natural beauty.
We offer some of the best local ales, food, and the best pub garden in the area!
Come visit us, everyone is welcome! If you like a circular walk with a good pub lunch along the way, try one of our walks.
We are a family run pub, serving real ales.
Everyone is welcome!
Come in and enjoy real ales from local brewers and good locally sourced food (dogs, children, walking boots and bikes are welcome but optional!)
Dogs
We LOVE dogs, so bring your fluffy friends to come to meet us. Water bowls are provided, there is a hose in the garden for particularly muddy pups, and there are free dog treats on the bar. If your are lucky you might even meet our pub mascot, our Miniature Schnauzer Bertie!
Families
We are a family-run pub. All families are welcome and we have high chairs, a toddler chair, and baby change facilities are also available in our accessible toilet. There are also free lollies on the bar and kids are welcome to treat our dog with the free treats on the bar. If you have any specific queries feel free to reach out via email or phone us.
Cyclists & Walkers
We love cyclists and walkers too. Try one of our circular walks. We know how annoying it can be if you don't have a safe space to lock up your bike- so you can use our pub garden.
Shortly, we will have bike racks - keep an eye on our social!
Accessibility
We will try our best to cater to everyone's needs and be as inclusive as possible and following our 2024 refurbishment we now have an accessible toilet.
Since we are a 17th Century pub with stone steps, wheelchair access has its challenges but is possible with assistance at this time. If you have specific accessibility needs and would like to know more, please give us a call on +44 (0)1594 833260 or email us at enquiries@TheOstrichInn.com.
Locally sourced ingredients & delicious seasonal dishes are our speciality
Our dishes use the best ingredients sourced locally and are prepared on site by our chef, Mark, and are cooked to order.
We aim to be as inclusive as possible through our veggie, vegan, and gluten-free options. Contact us if you would like to know more!
SPECIALS MENU
In addition to the regular menu our chefs prepare special dishes that change every week. These include fresh fish dishes that may change even more often. Please check out our Facebook or Instagram feeds for details or contact us (details below) for more information.
Deserts change weekly so here we have provided a sample menu.

Booking Terms & Conditions
The following terms apply to all bookings.
-
We allow a 15 minute grace period for late arrivals, after that we will regard you as a 'no show'. If you are running late, please just call and let us know and we will do our best to accomodate your new arrival time if we can.
-
Bookings for 4 or more seats require confirmation by provision of card details. Your card details may therefore be taken when booking and, if they are taken, they are stored by the payment provider Stripe as a security deposit in order to reserve your table.
-
No money will be deducted from your account except in the event of a 'no show'. If you cancel with a minimum of 24 hours notice, no fee will be charged. In the event of a 'no show' on a booking of 4 or more seats you will be charged a 'no show' fee of £12 (inc VAT) per seat booked.
-
We will only cancel your booking after we have confirmed it if there is an error or omission in the on-line booking system, or if it is necessary for us to do so for reasons beyond our reasonable control, for example damage to the building, power cuts, or staff sickness that cannot be covered by other staff members.
-
Your booking is time-limited. We may require your table for another party after 90 minutes (for bookings of 2), 120 minutes (for bookings of 3 to 8), and after 150 minutes for bookings of more than 8. This time limit does not apply for bookings from 7:30pm.
-
Please note that we are particularly busy on Sundays and we will almost certainly require your table back as per these time limits on a Sunday.
-
If you need a longer reservation, for example for a celebration or because a member of your party requires longer to eat, then please call us on 01594 833 260 as soon as possible after requesting your booking and we will do our best to accomodate you if we can.
-
Payment is of course required in full before you leave the premises. We accept cash (GBP) and most major payment cards, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. All prices include applicable VAT and our VAT number is printed on the till receipts.
-
Guests with allergies or intolerances must inform our serving staff of their needs before they order.
-
Unless agreed otherwise for private events, no charge is made for service. All gratuities received are distributed to our staff.

Our privacy policy applies and can be found via the link on the home page of our website.
